How to Control Your Hair When the Humidity is Out of Control

Summer means sunshine, warmth, beach days, and cottage weekends. Unfortunately for your hair, though, summer also means humidity. Humidity that makes your sleek blow-out turn into a poofy mess or your perfectly crafted waves fall flat and frizzy in no time at all.

Continue reading below for our best tips on how to manage your summer frizz and keep your hair looking amazing no matter the weather!

Before we get into these tips, make sure you book your next appointment ASAP! Spots for July are filling up fast!

    1. Use the Right Products

Good frizz management starts in the shower. As the sun and humidity can drastically dry out your hair it is important to make sure you are using the right products to combat this frizz-causing dryness. Use smoothing shampoo and conditioner, as well as leave-in conditioner treatments to fight the frizz before it has a chance to start. After washing your hair apply a lightweight serum or oil. These products will continue the work you started with your moisturizing shampoo!

    2. Braid your hair before you sleep

Braiding your hair at night will prevent the amount of friction created between your hair and your sheets and therefore reduce the amount of frizz. Use a silk scarf or snag-free hair ties to tie your hair up for the night.

    3. Wash your hair less

Over-washing your hair strips it of the natural oils that help it naturally combat frizz. Wash your hair every other day at most, and allow your hair to retain the oils that help keep it smooth. On days when you do not shampoo your hair, rinse with warm water, then condition and style as usual. This way, your hair feels fresh, but you haven’t stripped away all the oils your hair needs!

    4. Try “protective” styles

Instead of trying to force your hair into a sleek straightened look, go for braids, loose ponytails, or buns instead. These styles will keep your hair contained if it does get frizzy, and also keeps you cool by holding your hair off your neck!

    5. Don’t fight your natural hair

Getting your hair to hold a style is next to impossible when the summer humidity is at its peak. To minimize the amount of frizz you have to deal with, don’t fight your natural hair. If you have pin-straight hair, don’t go for a super curly look, because it will fall flat; if you have naturally curly hair, don’t straighten your hair, because it will get poofy and frizzy. Let your natural hair lead the way!

If you put these tips into action, you’ll keep your locks looking silky and smooth no matter what the weather!

  • Protecting Your Hair from the Summer Sun

Protecting Your Hair from the Summer Sun

As much as you love the warmth from the sun all summer long, the constant sunshine can be detrimental to your fresh, vibrant hair colour. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five ways you can protect your hair colour from the intense summer sun.

Before we continue on with these tips, make sure you book your next appointment ASAP! Spots are filling up quickly! Book your next appointment now!

    1. Make sure you are using a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner/purple pigmented ones for blondes

Make sure you are working to protect your hair before you even go out into the sun! To preserve your colour, use a colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner. This will make your colour last longer, stay more vibrant, and be more resistant to fading both in the sun and out of it.

    2. Invest in a sunblock for your hair

We all know how important it is to apply sunscreen to our skin when we’re outside in the summer, but did you know your hair needs the same treatment? Your hair and scalp are at just as much risk of damage from the sun’s heat and UVA/UVB rays as the rest of your skin is. Before going outside, apply a specially formulated sunblock for hair and scalp to protect your hair from drying out and your colour from fading!

    3. Do weekly deep conditioning treatments

Dry hair is at higher risk of damage and colour fade, so do deep conditioning treatments on your hair at least once per week. Applying these treatments will replenish your hair’s moisture and help it hang onto your colour longer!

    4. Apply leave-in conditioner when you go to the beach

If you’re heading down to the beach or spending the afternoon poolside, apply a leave-in conditioner to protect your hair from any salt or chlorine your hair may come into contact with when you jump in the water to cool down! The conditioner creates a protective barrier between your hair and the water which will prevent it from absorbing those damaging chemicals. You can reapply throughout the day as needed!

    5. Wear a hat!

Finally, the simplest solution of them all: just wear a hat! Not only will wearing a hat guard your hair from the colour-fading rays of the sun, but it will also keep you cooler and protect your face from the sun.

With these tips, you can be sure your colour will be long-lasting and beautiful this summer! If you want to know more, or want a professional opinion, book an appointment with one of our expert stylists today!

  • Volumizing Fine Hair

    Volumizing Fine Hair

If you have fine, thin hair, it can be incredibly difficult to get any sort of volume into your style! That is why I am here to help! I have compiled a list of tips to help you volumize your fine hair.

Keep reading to find out how to get great volume in fine hair:

    1. Wash your hair the right way
When shampooing your hair, make sure you are only applying shampoo to your roots, then gently spread it through the rest of your hair. When applying conditioner, only apply it to the bottom two-thirds of your hair. Conditioner can be heavy and weigh down your hair, removing any chance of natural volume!

    2. Use velcro rollers
Blow dry your hair until it is about 75% dry, then section it off into 2-inch sections. Wrap each section around a roller and roll it all the way up to your roots. Once each piece is rolled, set the curls with your blow dryer, continuing until each piece is dry. After that, take out the rollers and you will be left with glamorous, voluminous curls!

    3. Blow dry your hair upside down
While blow drying your hair, flip your hair upside down and dry it this way! This technique will create lift in your hair because when you flip your hair back over, your roots have been set in a position where they are standing up slightly.

    4. Tease your hair
A simple trick to teasing your hair and getting volume without creating frizz is to use a toothbrush! Part your hair about one inch away from your regular part, flip it over, and use a toothbrush to tease the hair around your roots, then flip it back over! Using a toothbrush may seem strange, but the small, soft bristles make the added lift subtler and give you more control than a regular hairbrush.

    5. Use dry shampoo
Dry shampoo works to add volume in two ways. First, it allows you to extend the time between washes, which is important because washing your hair too often can strip it of natural oils and make it fall flat. Secondly, dry shampoo has volumizing effects of its own! Dry shampoo adds texture to your hair, making it easier to get volume, and you can also get specific volumizing dry shampoos.

With these tips you will finally be able to achieve the volumized look you have always dreamed of!
